Werner Krauss plays a plodding railroad track-walker in Lupu Pick’s drab family crime story made to fit screenwriter Carl Mayer’s rigorous self-imposed rules: no more than three characters, acting in sharply constricted time and space, with virtually no intertitles.

Production still from The Last Man

Der Letzte Mann (The Last Laugh aka The Last Man) 1924 All ages
35MM, BLACK AND WHITE, SILENT (LIVE MUSICAL ACCOMPANIMENT), 75 MINUTES, GERMANY, ENGLISH INTERTITLES / DIRECTOR: FRIEDRICH WILHELM MURNAU / SCRIPT: CARL MAYER / CINEMATOGRAPHER: KARL FREUND / EDITOR: ELFI BÖTTRICH / PRODUCTION CO: UNIVERSUM-FILM / PRINT SOURCE/RIGHTS: TRANSIT FILM GMBH

A German kammerspielfilm on the grand plan, and one of the glories of silent cinema. It is Carl May’s story with a Brechtian stinger in its tail, about a proud hotel doorman who is demoted to lavatory attendant. Karl Freund's camera-on-wheels glides, swings, and see-saws, recording Emil Jannings’ classic performance.

Sun 30 Nov 3.00pm / Cinema A

Production still from Variety

Varieté (Variety) 1925 All ages
35MM, BLACK AND WHITE, SILENT (LIVE MUSICAL ACCOMPANIMENT), 66 MINUTES, GERMANY, GERMAN (LIVE ENGLISH SUBTITLES) / DIRECTOR / SCRIPT: EWALD ANDRÉ DUPONT / CINEMATOGRAPHER: KARL FREUND, CARL HOFFMANN / PRODUCTION CO: UNIVERSUM-FILM / PRINT SOURCE/RIGHTS: TRANSIT FILM GMBH

Variety ranks as one of Weimar Germany’s most influential films. Second-rate trapeze artists, consumed by jealousy, plot against each other while working their high-flying act without a safety net. Notable for Karl Freund’s virtuoso camerawork and Emil Jannings’ performance.

Thu 27 Nov 12 noon (with Backstairs) / Cinema A

Production still from Secrets of a Soul

Geheimnisse einer Seele (Secrets of a Soul) 1926 All ages
35MM, BLACK AND WHITE, SILENT (LIVE MUSICAL ACCOMPANIMENT), 81 MINUTES, GERMANY, GERMAN (ENGLISH INTERTITLES) / DIRECTOR: GEORG WILHELM PABST / SCRIPT: KARL ABRAHAM, HANS NEUMANN, COLIN ROSS, HANNS SACHS / CINEMATOGRAPHER: ROBERT LACH, CURT OERTEL, GUIDO SEEBER / PRODUCTION CO: NEUMANN-FILMPRODUKTION / PRINT SOURCE: GOETHE-INSTITUT / RIGHTS: TRANSIT FILM GMBH

Georg Wilhelm Pabst’s nuanced take on psychoanalysis. Werner Krauss panics when in a dream he tries to stab his wife, and sees a psychiatrist. Knives, doors, stairs, and ladders appear in double and triple-exposure, the contents of an afflicted mind. Pabst’s adroit film technique creates a multi-layered work that may (or may not) contain a critique of psychoanalysis. Freud himself repudiated the film.

Sat 29 Nov 1.00pm / Cinema A

Production still from The Lodger

The Lodger 1926 All ages
35MM, BLACK AND WHITE, SILENT (LIVE MUSICAL ACCOMPANIMENT), 98 MINUTES, UK, ENGLISH / DIRECTOR: ALFRED HITCHCOCK / SCRIPT: ELIOT STANNARD / ORIGINAL STORY: MARIE BELLOC LOWNDES / CINEMATOGRAPHER: GAETANO DI VENTIMIGLIA / EDITOR: IVOR MONTAGU / PRODUCTION CO: CARLYLE BLACKWELL PRODUCTIONS, GAINSBOROUGH PICTURES / PRINT SOURCE/RIGHTS: PARK CIRCUS

Matinee idol Ramon Novello stars as the creepy lodger in Alfred Hitchcock’s silent version of the popular 1913 mystery novel by Mrs Belloc Lowndes about the crimes of Jack the Ripper. Hitchcock gives it the eerie visual touches he had learned from the Germans when working as an art director at Universum-Film. It was also Hitchcock’s first international triumph.

Fri 28 Nov 6.00pm / Cinema B

Heimkehr (Homecoming) 1928 All ages
35MM, BLACK AND WHITE, SILENT (LIVE MUSICAL ACCOMPANIMENT), 75 MINUTES, GERMANY, GERMAN INTERTITLES (LIVE ENGLISH SUBTITLES) / DIRECTOR: JOE MAY / SCRIPT: JOE MAY, FRITZ WENDHAUSEN / ORIGINAL STORY: LEONHARD FRANK / CINEMATOGRAPHER: KONSTANTIN IRMEN-TSCHET, GÜNTHER RITTAU / PRODUCTION CO: UNIVERSUM-FILM / RIGHTS: FRIEDRICH-WILHELM-MURNAU-STIFTUNG

A love triangle of sorts, featuring two friends locked up in a Siberian prisoner of war camp, one of whom (Gustav Frohlich) escapes and decides to visit his friend’s wife (Dita Parlo). Complications ensue. Lavish studio stylisation alternates with raw, semi-documentary footage of the seaport of Hamburg.

Sun 30 Nov 1.00pm / Cinema A

Production still from Maidens In Uniform)

Mädchen In Uniform (Maidens in Uniform) 1931 All ages
35MM, BLACK AND WHITE, MONO, 88 MINUTES, GERMANY, GERMAN / DIRECTOR: LEONTINE SAGAN / SCRIPT: F D ANDAM, CHRISTA WINSLOE / CINEMATOGRAPHER: REIMAR KUNTZE, FRANZ WEIHMAYR / PRODUCTION CO: DEUTSCHE FILM-GEMEINSCHAFT / PRINT SOURCE: DEUTSCHE KINEMATHEK / RIGHTS: BETA FILM GMBH

Leontine Sagan’s all-too-seldom-seen gem set in a boarding school for well-to-do girls, where an unhappy pupil’s crush on a beloved teacher triggers violent retaliation from the demonic Headmistress. Today considered a landmark in Queer cinema, it is also one of German cinema’s great love stories.
