The Queensland Art Gallery plays a unique role in Australia and internationally by collecting and exhibiting contemporary Asian art. The Collection includes significant works from the Asian region ― defined as spanning the Indian subcontinent to Japan ― and consists of over 400 works in a diverse range of media, from painting to digital video, the earliest dating from 1972.
The Collection includes a number of works that have been acquired from the 'Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art' series of exhibitions, a major commitment of the Queensland Art Gallery since 1993. These include works by senior artists such as Lee Ufan, Nam June Paik, Xu Bing, Heri Dono and Yayoi Kusama. This group of artists forms a significant component of the Kenneth and Yasuko Myer Collection of Contemporary Asian Art which was established in 1993 with funds from the Myer Foundation and Michael Simcha Baevski.
The Collection also holds a significant representation of Chinese art and Japanese works on paper including the work of Ah Xian, Chen Zhen, Cai Guo Qiang, Hiroshi Sugimoto and Yasumasa Morimura. South Asian artists including Nilima Sheikh (India) and Nalini Malani (India), and South-East Asian artists such as Simryn Gill (Malaysia) and Dadang Christanto (Indonesia) are also represented in the Collection.
The Gallery regularly changes the works on display to ensure visitors have the opportunity to view a wide variety of works from the Collection. The online interactive resource, Design your own tour, includes images and information on some of the art works currently on display. |
