In recent decades, international contemporary art events such as regular biennales, triennials and art fairs have established an expanded field of production, engagement and reception for contemporary art.
A number of significant works by international artists have been acquired by the Gallery in recent years including installations by British artists Rachel Whiteread and Richard Long, and a photomedia work by Gilbert and George. The resurgence of German painting in the 1980s is represented through major works by Georg Baselitz and Sigmar Polke. The broad geographical context for international art is further illustrated by a major painting by Californian artist Edward Ruscha and an animated film work by South African artist William Kentridge.
Works by a younger generation of increasingly transient international artists are being added to the Collection in order to reflect and capture aspects of more recent cultural issues and practices including video, film, new media and broad interdisciplinary projects.
The Gallery regularly changes the works on display to ensure visitors have the opportunity to view a wide variety of works from the Collection. The online interactive resource, Design your own tour, includes images and information on some of the art works currently on display. |
