Public programs for adults

The Gallery's public programs emphasise the Collection and exhibitions and engage people of all ages. The public program includes monthly lectures, in conversation programs, artist talks, seminars and performances, held across the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art.

Talking about modern art series

2.00pm Saturdays 28 June, 5 & 19 July, 16 & 30 August and 6 & 13 September, GoMA
Free. No bookings necessary, however, seating is limited.

Learn more about modern art through this series of talks exploring the life and times of artists such as Picasso and his circle and major developments in art history of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Series includes masterclass sessions chaired by series presenter Dr Mark Pennings, Lecturer, Visual Arts, Queensland University of Technology, and involving national arts professionals.

'Place Makers: Contemporary Queensland Architects' opening weekend talks — 'Ideas behind the architecture'
Celebrate the opening of ‘Places Makers: Contemporary Queensland Architects’ and hear from architects in the exhibition at this weekend of talks and discussions. Level 3, GoMA

Visiting scholar lecture
2.30pm Friday 8 August. State Library of Queensland, Auditorium 1
Terry Smith is the Andrew W Mellon Professor of Contemporary Art History and Theory at the University of Pittsburgh. This lecture will take up and further develop ideas presented in Smith’s 2006 publication The Architecture of Aftermath (University of Chicago Press), which explores how global politics and clashing cultures following the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York have changed the way we experience late modern architecture. The lecture is presented by the University of Queensland, where Terry Smith is the 2008 recipient of the Daphne Mayo Visiting Professorship in Visual Culture, in association with the State Library of Queensland and the Queensland Art Gallery.

The Southern Cross Soloists, led by Paul Dean, present a retrospective of Australian chamber music responding to the progression of Sidney Nolan’s work from the 1930s to the 1980s. QAG.

Dr Nancy Underhill, art historian, editor of Nolan on Nolan, Sidney Nolan in his own words and co-editor of The Letters of John Reid (2001) and Making Australian Art (1991), leads visitors on a guided tour of the ‘Sidney Nolan’ exhibition. Please meet at the exhibition entrance.

Group tours

The Gallery provides free guided tours to special-interest groups of ten or more people. Tours last 30 minutes, and are scheduled between 10.00am and 2.00pm.

To secure the services of a volunteer guide, at least 15 days' notice via telephone is required. As the number of guides is limited, it is recommended you contact the Education Bookings Office on 07 3840 7255 to arrange your tour. The Bookings Office is open between the hours of 8.30am and 4.00pm Monday to Friday.

If your group does not require a guide, you may opt for a self-guided tour. Bookings for groups of ten or more are essential. To book a self-guided group visit for ten or more people, please call the Education Bookings Office on 07 3840 7255 or submitt an inquiry email.
