Natee Utarit is aware that, since the death of his father in 1976, his mother has existed in a continuous and private state of grief, as has the artist. Utarit’s portraits of his mother seek to subtly reveal and contemplate this complex situation. He has stated: ‘My paintings serve as a communication channel between the inside and the outside set under the relationship of what we see and feel’. Painting her figure from behind, Utarit shields her from the gaze of onlookers, creating an impression of her contained emotional state. The audience is confronted with an ever-diminishing image of this woman – the reductionist element is carried right through the triptych, beginning with a profile and ending with a three-quarter image of her head.
