11 - 25 January 2003 (10.00am - 3.00pm daily)
Queensland Art Gallery
The Gallery's acclaimed 'Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art 2002' and 'Kids' APT' culminated in Summer Spectacular, a 15-day festival of Asian and Pacific arts, culture, myths and legends just for kids. Summer Spectacular presented more than 30 free activities (in addition to the 'Kids' APT' program), including performances and art-making workshops. Bug Master, the mascot of Summer Spectacular, encouraged children to explore the Gallery and participate in activities including storytelling, drawing, music making, Pacific dancing and Tai Chi.
Summer Spectacular offered opportunities for children to understand, appreciate, and interact with contemporary art and culture from the Asia-Pacific region. Children were encouraged to discover Pacific mythology and legends in the work of APT 2002 artists Lisa Reihana, Nalini Malani, Sofia Tekela-Smith and Niki Hastings-McFall. Summer Spectacular also featured language sessions in Japanese, Chinese and Indonesian so children could learn stories, songs and dance from the Asia-Pacific region. Over 50 000 people attended Summer Spectacular.
